A Study of Serological Reactions Associated with Experimental Plethora and Plethoric Anemia.

چکیده
It has been the uniform experience of investigators studying experimental plethora that plethora can be artificially induced by the transfusion of blood into an homologous animal. After the plethora has reached a maximum, there frequently follows an anemia, sufficiently severe in some cases to cause death. Theories have been offered to explain the mechanism of this blood destruction but the experimental data so far accumulated have not justified a final conclusion. In order to obtain further data on the mechanism of the blood destruction following plethora, we have undertaken this study. We have employed serological methods in attempting an explanation. Others also have used similar methods in the study of this problem, but in most cases the determinations were not made quantitatively and the results were not uniform. Itami (1) found no hemolysins in the blood of transfused rabbits. Boycott and Douglas (2) (3) also obtained negative results. Ottenberg, Kaliski and Friedman (4) found both agglutinins and hemolysiniins in the blood of transfused dogs, and in a subsequent study Ottenberg and Thalheimer (5) demonstrated both of these kinds of antibodies in the blood of transfused cats. Robertson (6) reported the development of agglutinins in rabbits coincident with the development of anemia and Kambe and Komiya (7) found an agglutination titer of 1: 150 in the blood of a recipient rabbit, while Krumbhaar and Chanutin (8) found neither agglutinins nor hemolysins in their experimental rabbits.

Studies on Experimental Plethora in Dogs and Rabbits
1. The effects of repeated transfusions of blood on the blood-destroying and blood-forming apparatus of normal and splenectomized dogs and rabbits have been described. An anemia which developed despite continued blood transfusions in two dogs splenectomized during plethora has also been studied. 2. The decrease or absence of reticulocytes from the blood stream during plethora and their increase...
متن کاملThe Effects of Experimental Plethora on Blood Production
With the purpose of determining whether a diminished activity of the bone marrow could be brought about experimentally, plethora was produced in rabbits by means of repeated small transfusions of blood. Counts of the number of reticulated red cells in the circulating blood were made during the course of the experiments as an index to changes in the activity of the bone marrow. With the developm...
متن کاملFactors which affect erythropoiesis in partially nephrectomized and sham-operated rats.
Current concepts of the pathogenesis of anemia in uremic animals are derived mainly from the results of studies performed either in vitro or in bilaterally nephrectomized animals. These data may not be applicable to the situation which exists in more chronically uremic animals. In 1932, Chanutin and Ferris showed that removal of five-sixths of the renal mass caused rats to become uremic and to ...

متن کاملThe Relation between Periodontitis and Anemia Associated Parameters
Introduction: Periodontal disease, an inflamma- tory and infectious disease in adults and anemia associated with chronic infection, is one of the most common types of anemia. Considering the similarity of pathogens causing periodontal disease and anemia, this study aims to investigate the correlation between hematologic parameters associated with anemia and moderate chronic periodontitis. &...
